Sun Wukong- The Monkey King

Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, appears as one of the main characters in the 16th century Chinese classical novel Journey to the West. In the novel, he was a monkey that was birthed by a boulder. He acquired supernatural powers as well as magical weapons and armor which represented his vigor and fearlessness.

In the video, our master artisans start by sculpting then casting every single piece of the Monkey King, this is the most arduous process as it is important to make sure that every detail comes out clearly onto the mold. Additionally, the molds have to be made in such a way that each piece fits together seamlessly with the next in order to lessen the impact of the mold lines.

This entire work takes over a hundred different steps as well as several dozen separate pieces and people to come together. The teamwork and craftsmanship required to create such a piece is what we’re most proud of here at 1300.
